Michael Weiss Vanguard

Featuring styles under the Modernism and Classics collections, furniture by Juilliard- trained designer Michael Weiss is a study in the seamless blending of contrasts. Clean, sleek lines and classic geometric forms are presented in refreshing and dramatic modern designs.

Modernism is a collection of contemporary styles with energy and fluidity, while Classics is a free form, artistic mix of historical influences, inspired by classic taste and style.

A student of 19th and 20th century classic Modern style, Michael has a pedigree of fine design, being the son of Lillian August, one of the most respected and venerable names in home furnishings today. He is quickly creating a sphere of his own with his latest collections which fit well with Vanguard’s overall design philosophy and commitment to serving the customers’ needs.

His contemporary yet ultimately livable pieces continue to appeal to collectors who are selecting investment quality furniture. “They want their homes to reflect individuality, style and taste,” Michael explained.

Although people often use “Modern” and “Contemporary” interchangeably, Weiss explained the difference: “Modern demonstrates a reverence for classic-design style periods of history and decorative art. Conversely, Contemporary is anything you want it to be; it can reject design and art history altogether.”

Michael is also quick to point out that people are mixing styles in their homes more than ever. “Today, we are experiencing another major shift in design, and there’s a return to the free-thinking that started in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Consequently, there’s a less rigid framework to the creative process.”

He enjoys the more free-spirited thinking and has fun with it, including using materials like polished stainless steel, or incorporating metal into his upholstery designs. He also feels that furniture today should have lighter finishes and has expanded his color palette to include gray and linen finishes.
